Last night I heard the devil crying
He seemed overwhelmed with grief
Me and my broken heart just stood there sighing
And I thought of you as such a lousy thief
No-one here will take me to the dances
They all look twice as mad as me
So I'll stand up and take my chances
In the waiting room it’s hard to find good company
It's funny how the morning breeze tries to sweep away
the silent sadness of the dawn
The tall and open window helps me greet the day
like the last proud flower on a drying lawn
I still recall the day I saw you smiling
though I don't remember much of what you said
Your laughing eyes were so beguiling
I felt like I was rising from the dead
Now I'm making plans just to keep my mind from reeling
But there is no place left but the open sea
I put my trust in that hole in the ceiling
as I watch the devil spill his tea
They came and gave me a white jacket
Then they helped me put it on
They said "Calm down, don't you start no racket.
We are here to help you, son."
